Expert summary
Tyres or tires are ring-shaped parts, either pneumatic or solid, that fit around wheels to protect them and enhance their effect. Tyres provide more traction, braking, steering and load support. Pneumatic tyres are used on bicycles, motorcycles, cars, trucks, earthmovers, and aircraft. Tyres function as a fine cushion between the road and the vehicle. That helps in smoothing out shock and makes the ride more comfortable. At first, a tyre was a band of iron or steel heated and fitted on a wooden wheel. It was the Scot John Boyd Dunlop, who made the first pneumatic tyre. His patent was later rejected because another Scot, Robert William Thomson had made one before him.
